DESCRIPTION:This event is presented by the Wallingford Public Library:\nIn 2024\, Sleeping Giant State Park turned 100 years old! Creating the park was not easy nor quick. This is a dynamic story of early 20th-century conflicting priorities and hard-reached resolutions: destructive commercial interests\, the public’s passion for preservation\, and thorny legal battles. The cast includes Mt. Carmel businessmen\, Yale scholars\, captains of industry\, and the Park Association’s founding members whose love for the Giant ultimately prevailed. This talk will follow twenty-five years of fascinating twists and turns that culminated with the beautiful park we love today. \nTrina Learned’s passion for Sleeping Giant State Park came out of a photography course\, when assigned hikes led to curiosity led to curiosity about the origin of park buildings and the abandoned quarry. When not on the giant\, Trina is the Executive Director of Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven and sits of the Sleeping Giant Park Association board. \nAdvanced registration is encouraged.\nClick Here to Register >>

The cast includes neighboring businessmen\, Yale scholars\, captains of industry\, and the Park Association’s founding members whose love for the Giant ultimately prevailed. This talk by Trina Mace Learned will follow twenty-five years of fascinating twists and turns that culminated in the beautiful park we love today. \nTrina Mace Learned’s passion for Sleeping Giant State Park came out of a graduate photography course\, taken at Wesleyan University during the pandemic. Weekly assigned hikes led to the discovery of structures in the west end of the park; curiosity led to a master’s thesis inspired by the origin of those buildings and the adjacent abandoned quarry. When not snapping pictures of the Giant\, Trina is the Executive Director of Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven\, chairs the city’s Historic District Commission\, and sits on the boards of the New Haven Museum and the Sleeping Giant Park Association. \nAdvanced registration is strongly encouraged.\nClick Here to Register >>

SUMMARY:Interpretive Panel Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Please join CT DEEP and the Sleeping Giant Park Association at the Sleeping Giant Interpretive Panel Unveiling: \nAll are welcome to join the unveiling of an interpretive panel explaining the significance and history of Sleeping Giant. The interpretive panel was developed to fulfill the obligations of the Sleeping Giant State Park Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)\, which resolved the adverse effects to this Traditional Cultural Property under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1996. \nThe Interpretive Panel Unveiling will include a recognition of the importance of Sleeping Giant as a “Traditional Cultural Property” to the Quinnipiac and other southern New England tribes\, including the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut. \nWe look forward to seeing you at this event!
