A New Gateway to the Giant

Construction Underway on the Sleeping Giant Welcome Center

If you’ve visited the park recently, you’ve probably noticed something exciting taking shape near the start of the Tower Path — walls rising, roof trusses stacked and ready, and a new chapter in Sleeping Giant’s history beginning to take form.

The long-awaited Sleeping Giant State Park Welcome Center is now under construction, and as of today, the building’s framework is visible to hikers and visitors entering the park. Designed to serve as a gateway to the rest of the park, the Welcome Center will be a place for learning, gathering, and celebrating all that makes the Giant special.

What’s Happening Now

Much of the visible progress so far has focused on getting the building’s shell in place — erecting walls, unloading roof trusses, and installing critical infrastructure like the new septic system and leach field. The “earthmoving” you may have seen around the construction site supports that important groundwork.

While the exterior structure will come together relatively quickly, the interior work — plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and finishing — will take time. We currently anticipate the building will open in early to mid-2026, perhaps by spring. Once we have a clearer timeline, we look forward to celebrating this milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the community that has helped make it possible.

What’s Inside

The Welcome Center will feature a large, multipurpose room, which the state has entrusted to SGPA to furnish and bring to life. This space will host rotating exhibits on the park’s rich history, diverse ecology, and recreational opportunities, offering visitors a deeper connection to Sleeping Giant’s natural and cultural heritage.

We also envision the room as a hub for community activity — a place for SGPA programs and events, speaker presentations, meetings, and school or youth group gatherings. In time, we hope the Welcome Center becomes a place where both seasoned hikers and first-time visitors can engage with the Giant in new ways.

And yes — the Welcome Center will also include two new bathrooms, a much-needed improvement from the park’s current trailer facility. (A second, permanent restroom building remains on the state’s future project list.)

How Can You Help?

While construction of the building itself is funded by the state, SGPA is responsible for furnishing the interior — transforming the space from a simple building into a true Welcome Center. Thanks to several generous donors, we’ve already begun planning, but your support will help take this project from good to great.

Your gift will help us create engaging exhibits, comfortable and functional meeting space, and a welcoming environment for generations of park visitors.

Make a donation today to support the Welcome Center and help us write the next chapter in the story of Sleeping Giant.

Together, we’re building more than a structure — we’re building a legacy for everyone who loves the Giant.
