About Committees

While the Board of the Sleeping Giant Park Association governs and leads the organization, much of SGPA’s programmatic work is accomplished at the committee level.

If you have talents or interests that align with a committee’s work, please contact us and we can connect you with the committee chair. You do not need to be on the SGPA board to serve on a committee

Programs & Events

Engage park visitors with fun, educational, and inspiring programs and events.

  • Offer seasonal guided hikes and manage the Giant Master Program.
  • Table at community events and provide resources for educational programs.
  • Coordinate programs with school and scout groups to inspire the next generation of park stewards.
  • Work with other committees to create dynamic displays for the Welcome Center.

Environmental Stewardship

Make a difference by caring for the Giant’s natural habitats and restoring native ecosystems.

  • Plan and coordinate volunteers for invasive plant removal, tree planting, and habitat restoration projects.
  • Maintain the pollinator garden, fostering biodiversity and supporting local wildlife.

Trail Maintenance

Keep the Giant’s trails safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all visitors.

  • Plan and coordinate trail maintenance projects with volunteers.
  • Oversee Scout Projects, ensuring collaboration and stewardship align with SGPA goals.

Land Acquisition

Shape the future of Sleeping Giant State Park by growing and protecting its footprint.

  • Identify properties for strategic addition to the park.
  • Manage due diligence and reporting during the acquisition process.
  • Coordinate the transfer of acquired properties to the state, occasionally assisting with grantwriting.

Communication & Outreach

Help spread the word about SGPA’s activities and programs while keeping our members and visitors informed and inspired.

  • Produce the Giant News publication and explore opportunities for a Giant eNews.
  • Keep the SGPA website and social media channels up to date.
  • Coordinate press releases and other external communications.
  • Update and reprint trail maps, ensuring visitors have the resources they need to enjoy the park.

Fundraising & Membership

Support the Giant through creative fundraising and membership engagement efforts.

  • Coordinate appeals through mailings and e-appeals.
  • Ensure timely acknowledgment of donor gifts.
  • Liaise with the merchandise vendor to support SGPA’s mission through product sales.
  • Identify and apply for grants, as appropriate

History

Help preserve and share the rich history of Sleeping Giant State Park.

  • Research and share historical insights about the park.
  • Add valuable materials to the Hamden History Room archives to ensure the park’s story is preserved for future generations.

Finance

Play a vital role in ensuring SGPA’s financial health and sustainability.

  • Review monthly financial reports prepared by the Treasurer.
  • Assist with financial reviews and audits as needed.
  • Ensure proper oversight of financial transactions and records.
  • Maintain and evaluate insurance coverage to protect SGPA.

Nominating & Governance

Strengthen SGPA’s leadership and governance for long-term success.

  • Identify and vet prospective board members.
  • Draft and refine policies for board review and adoption.
  • Review and propose revisions to bylaws and articles of association as needed.
